JUDY KIRTLEY

This work being shown at BlueStone Gallery is a flight of freedom for me. The work is called “Restorations.” The concept for the title comes from wanting to restore the images to what I felt and saw at the moment I photographed them. Having explored alternative photography over the years, discovering liquid emulsion has presented a very fertile ground for experimentation. As a student of painting and drawing, as well as photography, it offers me a sort of bridge among major disciplines to print my black and white negatives on watercolor paper and paint or draw or use pastels on the prints. Because of the process each print is necessarily unique and unrepeatable. I’ve been very fortunate to work with models that understand an artist’s words and needs, and each of them brings her own special beauty and sensibilities.
