JIM WALLACE

Following University and a background in the natural sciences, Jim Wallace spent 9 years teaching environmental biology and outdoor education. In teaching an awareness of the natural world, Jim found his own sensitivity to the natural world sharpened greatly. During this time he spent much of his free time traveling in the wilder, more remote areas of the US.

In 1978 Jim left teaching and chose photography as a means to spend more time in the wild places he had grown to love.
Currently Jim continue to travel into these wild places and explore the possibilities of the photographic print.

The Process

The photographs are made using a 4x5 view camera with exposure onto color negative film and most recently transparency film.

For the larger prints ( 20x24 and larger) the final image is made onto a traditional light sensitive photographic paper (Fuji's Crystal Archive). Although I am using traditional film and photographic paper, I also use a high resolution digital scanner and a computer to finalize my image before the final print is made through a light exposure onto paper.

Most recently I have been using an Epson printer with permanent archival inks for the 16x20 and smaller images because I have found the color fidelity and range to be more full spectrum. The Permanence factor is now also higher than traditional photographic materials. I see this as the future for the larger prints also as the materials constantly improve.
